Virtual Being

Class:Graduate Studio 1

An information visualization of my life time

About this project

Self portrait as information design is my first assignment in Carnegie Mellon University, Interaction Design program. Dan Boyarski, the head of school of design asked each of us to create a self portrait poser to introduce ourselves, along with a process book to document some thoughts and expectations. I mapped out my 23 years with detail stories and emotions, color-coded with emotions at that specific time. In my process book, I got 23 signatures from design students in my studio, too.

The home Screen contains many faces representing different "people." Their expressions are controlled through user actions or are set based on external data sources. Spontaneity is introduced into the system to keep the faces changing without user input. The New York Times RSS feed is monitored and a word from an article's title is fed into Google. The number of hits returned from Google becomes an index number used to select from a list of faces. User initiates an action, relationship, or makeover by clicking on two faces in sequence. Backgrounds under the faces light up on hover and a line follows the mouse until the second face is clicked.
